Literacy Coach Heather Camp reads a story about summer play to children in the shade.

The Tribe Train has been making stops all around Heard County, bringing books, food and fun to children of all ages! The Tribe Train is a mobile resource bus that is operated by the Heard County Community Partnership. For the past 3 years, the month of June has featured weekly Tribe Train events co-hosted by Heard County School System and HCCP. This year, the events have been held at the newly renovated park on Glover Road,  Centralhatchee Park, the new covered sports facility at Heard County High School, and will conclude at the Outpost Family Resource Center.

Children have played, created art, heard fun stories read by friendly teachers, and picked out books of their own to take home each week. Additionally, meals have been provided through the Summer Lunch Program sponsored by Heard County School Nutrition. Children have received a lunch for the day, as well as breakfasts and lunches for the weekend. They’ve also

gotten a bag of snacks provided by the Backpack Program of Heard County Food Pantry.

The goal of the Tribe Train events is to encourage reading during the summer months and provide a semi-structured playtime for children with their peers. Each year, participation in the events has grown, and organizers hope that the excitement for the Tribe Train will continue to spread throughout the Heard County community.
